Moscow 1992
The Holocaust Requiem
was performed in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on October
4th 1992, with a distinguished audience including the German and Israeli
Ambassadors. The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Yurloff State chorus,
and the Yekaterinburg Children’s Chorus were conducted by Joel Spiegelman.
The Narrator was Bel Kaufman, grand-daughter of the renowned Russian Yiddish
writer Sholem Alechem, herself a distinguished writer. This performance
was broadcast and widely publicized, and was the occasion of the first
public recognition in Russia since Stalin’s times that the Jews
were a prime target of the Nazi Holocaust, and not only Slavs and Communists.
This event was recorded live and issued as a commercial CD by Delos.
